Harlem was considered a middle and upper
class white neighborhood for a long time. That all changed in the after the
Great Migration really took off in 1910, when the North really got the
attention of African Americans. The great migration was a movement of the exodus of blacks from
their homeland in the South to cities in the
North such as New York, Cleveland, Chicago, and Detroit, for a fresh life with
new opportunities.
