Both
blacks, and whites wandered through Harlem establishments like the Cotton Club, Jungle
alley, and Savoy Ballroom, these clubs while for most of them all races could congregate in these clubs and hang out, and have fun, black
customers were usually barred from entering, and sharing time with the new
mainstream music from the Cotton Club which won the most popularity from whites.
The club's (Cotton club) bandleader, Duke Ellington, became one of America's
greatest popular composers. There and in clubs catering to black customers as
well, garnering respect from both people, and musicians like trumpeter Louis
Armstrong created the new higher standard for American music. Some other
musicians and composers of the time include: Cab Calloway, who was made famous
for his acts in the Cotton club and his song “Minnie the Moocher” and Billie
Holiday, who was a very popular jazz singer who made a plethora of songs such
as "God Bless the Child"
and “Stranger Fruit”.
